VideoGrab is a free, open-source extension that saves videos from X/Twitter, Douyin, Bilibili, YouTube and most other sites — no uploads, no accounts, no sketchy converter sites.
Most downloaders hand you split audio/video HLS tracks. VideoGrab resolves the highest-bitrate direct MP4 — up to 4K, audio included.
Dedicated resolvers for the platforms Western downloaders ignore, including the Referer handling their CDNs require.
Background downloads that survive closing the popup, with segment caching and resume, AES-128 support, and in-browser TS→MP4 remuxing.
There is no server. Detection and downloading happen entirely in your browser, and the source code is public — audit it yourself.
| Site | What you get | Ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| X / Twitter | Direct MP4, highest bitrate | Up to 4K, with audio |
| Douyin | Direct MP4 via resolver | Best stream the page offers |
| Bilibili | Merged MP4 via official API | 720p on the HTML5 path |
| YouTube | Progressive MP4 (audio + video) | Usually 360p — higher is adaptive-only |
| Most other sites | Generic MP4 / WebM / HLS detection | Whatever the page plays |
| Netflix, Disney+, Max | Not supported | DRM — out of scope by design |
Windows desktop app: one single-file program — download the exe, run it, paste a video link, done. No browser needed.
Firefox: install from Firefox Add-ons.
Chrome / Edge: the Chrome Web Store doesn't list YouTube-capable downloaders, so Chrome users install from GitHub (takes a minute):
chrome://extensions and enable Developer mode (top right). Is it really free?Yes. VideoGrab is open-source software under GPL-3.0. No ads, no upsells, no "premium" tier.
Why isn't it on the Chrome Web Store?Store policy prohibits listing extensions that facilitate downloading from YouTube. Rather than ship a crippled build, VideoGrab distributes the full version through GitHub (Chrome) and Firefox Add-ons (Firefox).
Does it upload my videos or browsing data anywhere? No. There is no server to upload to. Platform APIs are called directly from your browser, with your own session, only for the page you are on. See the privacy policy.
Is downloading videos legal?VideoGrab is a tool for saving content you have the right to download — your own uploads, openly licensed material, and content you are otherwise permitted to save. You are responsible for each site's terms of service and your local copyright law.
A site stopped working. What now?Platforms change their internals often, and resolvers can break until updated. Please open an issue on GitHub with the page URL — reports with a reproducible link are what get resolvers fixed.
